Schommer Selected For Exhibit

David Schommer was selected by the University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art for the Artists in Mississippi Libraries Exhibit, in October. He was one of only eight artists selected from throughout the entire state for the exhibit. The field was very competitive. He was required to submit several photographs for consideration. All were selected for the exhibit.

About My Work

A Louisiana native and born into a family of educators, my appreciation for photography began in high school where I served on the school’s yearbook staff. My first camera was a Pentax K-1000, which I used to photograph my father’s high school cross-country team. After graduating from the University of New Orleans with a B.A. in Education (and later, a M.Ed. in Educational Administration), I picked up a teaching position at St. Stanislaus College, in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. At the principal's request, I agreed to serve as the school’s yearbook/photography advisor. I now had access to a fully equipped darkroom for black and white photography and an unlimited number of photographic opportunities. It was at St. Stanislaus where I began to further develop my love and appreciation for the art. I produced two yearbooks while at St. Stanislaus and am currently serving my seventh year as yearbook sponsor at Watkins Elementary School, which is a part of Jackson Public School District.

In 2006, I started donating my artwork to raise money for various organizations. My work as been sold at silent auction for the Epilepsy Foundation, Hearts Against Aids Foundation, St. Francis Catholic Church, St. Mathews Methodist Church, St. Dominic Hospital, Greater Jackson Arts Council (Storytellers Ball), Madison Chamber of Commerce, and the Y.M.C.A. Sponsored by Photo Images Inc. (Jackson, MS), my work has also been sold directly to the consumer with proceeds benefiting local organizations.
